Badingger-Z, the Newest Kavogue Superhero, is Ready to Take Center Stage

Earlier this morning, CNN Philippines had the pleasure of interviewing Real S. Florido, the award-winning filmmaker, and comic book author behind ‘Badingger-Z and the Accla Assassin.’ Real shared a glimpse into Badingger-Z’s story and how the character embodies the spirit of the LGBTQIA+ community.

During his college years at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, he was part of their organization that staged the now-turned-comic book, Badingger-Z. Seemingly timed to be released in this era, he was keen on understanding the rise of this medium in the market.

“It’s been in the works for quite some time, and especially right now that comics– Pinoy comics actually are now having a resurgence. A lot of Filipino artists, comic artists, and visual artists are working in this kind of medium”, Real Florido said.

“It’s about this bullied military student. So, he went away from the military school because he was forced to be there, due to him being gay,” Real explained.

But the story takes a thrilling turn when Real reveals, “When he went back home, he discovered something: that he is actually a superhero called Badingger-Z.”

Having a keen eye on the market, he also saw the need for representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in mainstream media. In the comic book, it shows that they are more than what the media have portrayed in the past—sidekicks and merely comedic relief.

“I think that’s a prevalent issue amongst the young members of the LGBTQ community, and that is something I wanted them to identify with that they’re being seen, being heard and most especially now that kasi sa mainstream media, ng mga Filipino ‘di ba– It’s always sidekick ang LGBTQ+ member”, the author mentioned.

Taking center stage in the comic book, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community sparks a deep and meaningful conversation about the community’s capability for greatness.

“We are superheroes. Because we, too, can be heroes. Everyday you see heroes and you don’t know they’re members of LGBTQ pala ‘di ba?”, he added.

The comic book is also a product of collaboration with the talented Cebuano folklore comic book artist, Alfred Galarosa, and additional illustrations by Davao multimedia artist, Jermaine Tulbo.

Badingger-Z will be available from January 19 to 21 at Komiket 2024 at Ayala Market! Market! in Bonifacio Global City, Makati.
